How to Verify the Authenticity of Disposable Masks

With the ongoing mask shortage, counterfeit products are becoming increasingly prevalent in the market. To ensure the masks you purchase are genuine, consider the following identification methods:

1. Inspect the Inner Layer

Cut the mask open to examine the middle layer. Genuine disposable masks contain a dense, white meltblown cloth that provides effective filtration. In contrast, spunbond fabric is looser and more transparent. You can differentiate them by their strength: meltblown cloth tears easily when pulled, while spunbond fabric requires significantly more force to rip.

2. Visual Examination

Observe the mask's exterior. Authentic meltblown cloth has a tightly woven structure that resists light penetration. Many inferior masks lack this layer, resulting in high light transmittance, making facial features visible when worn.

3. Check for Static Electricity

Qualified 3-ply face masks undergo an "electret process," which charges the fibers and enhances their ability to trap fine particles through electrostatic attraction. You can test this by bringing a small piece of hair or iron filings close to the mask. Genuine masks will exhibit some attraction due to the static charge. Be cautious, as some counterfeit masks may contain meltblown cloth but lack the necessary electrostatic properties due to subpar manufacturing or prolonged storage.
