The Differences Between N95 and KN95 Masks

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the importance of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) like face masks remains paramount. Two of the most widely discussed mask types are N95 and KN95 respirators, but what exactly are the differences between them?

The key distinction lies in the standards they are certified to. N95 masks are approved by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), meeting strict filtration and performance criteria. KN95 masks, on the other hand, are certified by the Chinese government and meet standards set by the GB2626-2006 standard.

While both mask types are designed to filter out at least 95% of small airborne particles, studies have found that many counterfeit or fraudulent KN95 masks in circulation during the pandemic do not actually meet this standard. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cautioned that around 60% of KN95 masks in the country are counterfeit and do not meet requirements.

This highlights another key difference - N95 masks are regulated and verified, whereas the KN95 standard is more difficult to enforce, especially with the influx of poor-quality imports. N95s also tend to have a tighter fit around the face, creating a better seal to prevent leakage of unfiltered air.

Ultimately, when possible, N95 respirators are the safer and more reliable choice for high-risk situations. However, authentic KN95 masks can still provide good protection when N95s are unavailable. The most important factors are ensuring the mask is genuine and fits snugly.
